Discovery of 'creator' gene for cerebral cortex points to potential stem cell treatments (Jan 28)

University of California, Irvine researchers have identified a gene that is specifically responsible for generating the cerebral cortex, a finding that could lead to stem cell therapies to treat brain injuries.

Motorcycle helmets keep riders alive (Feb 4)

An international group of researchers has combined data from a variety of studies to determine how effective helmets really are and their findings confirm that helmet use is highly significant in reducing both accidental death and injury, reducing head injury risk by 69 percent and death by 42 percent.

Brain-injured war veterans show a faster decline in cognitive functioning as they age (Feb 11)

A study of Vietnam war veterans who suffered brain injuries during the conflict has found that the men show a faster decline in their cognitive functioning as they grow older than veterans without such injuries.
