Amnesia, Confusion May Signal Concussion (Sep 2)

Loss of consciousness may not be the main indicator of a concussion, according to new research. ?Athletes may sustain a severe concussion without losing consciousness,? says lead author Mark R. Lovell, Ph.D., director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Medicine Concussion program. ?Amnesia and confusion on the field after injury may be as important, if not more important, in making a return-to-play decision.?

'Treatment Window' for Brain Injury Widens (Sep 8)

In the treatment of brain injury, there is currently only a three-hour "window of therapeutic opportunity" to prevent additional brain cell damage and only one medication approved to improve blood flow to oxygen-deprived neurons near the injury, thereby minimizing potentially debilitating side effects. Now, scientists from Northwestern University report that a single injection of a chemical they created -- given up to six hours after brain injury or stroke -- protects against additional brain cell death for a week or longer.

Medication for Treatment of Loss of Cerebral and Motor Function Associated With Brain Injury (Sep 22)

Sirus Pharmaceuticals Limited announced initiation of a program of development of SRSS 025 for treatment of loss of motor function resulting from traumatic brain insult due to injury or stroke. The program is based upon a molecule which has a history of safe use in man which, combined with Sirus' proprietary delivery technologies, could provide a practical means for treatment of patients with this immensely important unmet medical need.

New Brain Injury Monitoring System (Sep 29)

Virginia Tech football helmets are fitted with six accelerometers, which measure impacts to the helmets in terms of "G" -- or gravity -- forces. During football games, the sensors transmit real-time impact data to a sideline computer system that keeps track of a range of head impact data for each player wearing the HITS sensors.

Coping With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Diane Roberts Stoler
Paperback; $11.17 (284pp)

Over 325,000 Americans annually suffer mild head trauma from automobile accidents, assaults, falls, sports injuries, etc. With a diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), the individual will be told to rest for a few days or weeks, and, with luck, that may be the end of it. Unfortunately, many of those affected suffer ongoing, debilitating symptoms?migraines, depression, seizures, etc.?for months or even years. Symptoms are unpredictable and are difficult to diagnose because there is no single test to detect MTBI and postconcussive syndrome (PCS). Stoler, a practicing psychologist who has herself experienced mild head injury, and Hill, a psychologist and writer, have compiled a comprehensive manual explaining what is involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of brain-injured people. Presenting short case studies, they discuss the difficult diagnostic context of head trauma and offer practical suggestions for coping with physical and emotional repercussions. Especially valuable for patient education libraries . . . click here for more information or to order

Head Injury: The Facts: A Guide for Families and Care-Givers
D. M. A. Gronwall, Philip Wrightson, Peter Waddell
Paperback; $19.95 (167 pp)

Each day throughout the world hundreds of people suffer head injuries. The after-care of the victim, once the injury is no longer life-threatening, is often inadequate, and all too often families are left to manage as best as they can. This book explains the effects of injury in non-technical terms and, where possible, suggests practical ways of overcoming these effects. The authors follow the stages that the patient goes through, and explain the procedures and techniques used to chart progress. They also examine the effect of head trauma on families and friends. For the person who will eventually recover sufficiently to do so, there are suggestions on managing the return to work or school most effectively. For those who will never reach this level, there is a section which describes the long-term adjustments that these people and their care-givers need to make. The final section outlines the requirements of a head injury rehabilitation system, and gives some suggestions about the steps that individuals can take to ensure that this sort of service is provided in their area. The new edition has been fully updated to reflect the recent advances in medical science . . . click here for more information or to order
