Course Description
This course will review the principles of applied behavior analysis and how it can be effectively used in brain injury rehabilitation. Participants will gain an understanding of the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the brain-behavior relationship. The potential positive and negative effects of medication and the importance of close monitoring will be reviewed. The course will describe the primary ethical concerns with implementing a sound behavioral program. Ten general management guidelines that will help reduce the occurrence of behavior problems is presented. The ABC's (antecedent, behavior and consequence) principles of applied behavior analysis will be outlined, as well as how to write an effective behavior plan with a variety of procedures. In conjunction, a number of data collection methods that allow for an efficient review of behavior programs will be taught. Lastly, is a review of the "assault cycle" and how to prevent a crisis situation and safely intervene if necessary.
