NEW RESEARCH ARTICLES
1. Household Falls May Produce More Severe Brain Injuries in Infants Than Previously Thought (8/04)
Researchers have determined that rapid head rotations sustained when a baby's head contacts a hard
surface during household falls may result in diffuse brain injuries. The findings call into question
earlier assessments of the seriousness of such falls by young infants, previously viewed by some as
unlikely to cause widespread brain injury.

2. Hypertonic Resuscitation May Help Victims Of Blunt Trauma (8/11)
Hypertonic resuscitation - a concentrated intravenous (IV) dose of saline and dextran, a sugar
solution - has the potential to help survivors of blunt trauma by improving blood flow and delivery
of oxygen to the injured brain while decreasing high pressure in the brain, a common problem for
patients with brain injury.

3. Inherited Gene May Place Some at Higher Risk of Post-Traumatic Injury Seizures (8/18)
People who inherit a particular gene involved in lipid metabolism in the brain appear to be at
higher risk of developing seizures after traumatic brain injury, according to researchers.
